The article talks about Obama's thoughtful assessment of the situation with regard to the Future Combat Systems program and McCain's representation of it:
“McCain’s interpretation of Obama’s position is typical of the way in which the Republicans have twisted Democratic views in order to undercut their opponents and at the same time obscure the past positions of the Republicans,” Thompson said. “Future Combat Systems is the centerpiece of Army modernization. However, McCain has been more critical of it than anyone else in the chamber. Obama has been much more detailed and thoughtful in his comments about future military investment than McCain’s very superficial statements.”
As an aside that plays into this story, I'm currently reading The Pornography of Power by Robert Scheer, the editor-in-chief of TruthDig.com. The book is about how national defense hawks took over policy after 9/11 and lined their pockets by, among other things, working on weapons systems that were totally and completely unnecessary for combating a stateless terrorist threat (like, say, Al-Qaeda).
Oddly, Scheer's story makes John McCain out to be the good guy who exposed the waste in these military-industrial complex schemes and sent some people to (federal) prison. But, now, it seems McCain's pendulum has swung back the other way in saying that he wouldn't cut anything with regard to this system...after saying he WOULD this past July when presenting his economic plan to the Washington Post.
So, which John McCain are we getting if we vote for him?
